As summer gatherings and outdoor activities increase, Shepton Mallet residents and those in the wider Mendip area are reminded of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) implemented by Somerset County Council in July 2021.
The PSPO is designed to address the rising concerns of anti-social behaviour stemming from the misuse of intoxicating substances, including drugs and alcohol, in public spaces.
Covering the entirety of Mendip, the PSPO is tailored to curb disturbances and ensure that public areas remain pleasant and safe for everyone. Importantly, the PSPO is not an outright ban on alcohol; it does not prohibit the responsible consumption of alcohol in public places, such as families enjoying a casual drink during a picnic in the park.
The power granted under the PSPO allows police officers and PCSOs to address potential disruptions proactively. They can ask individuals who are drinking alcohol and behaving disruptively to stop and surrender their drinks.
"The PSPO helps us ensure that everyone enjoys public spaces without the negative impact of anti-social behaviour," said a police spokesperson. "Our approach is not about restricting freedoms but about maintaining a balance where the community can enjoy shared spaces safely."
Failure to follow instructions under the PSPO can result in being reported to the council, with possible fines for those who breach the order. Repeated offences on the same day can lead to automatic breaches, reinforcing the seriousness with which these regulations are enforced.
These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to manage alcohol-related disturbances and enhance the overall quality of life in public areas across Shepton Mallet and surrounding regions.
