The Conservative Association announced the selection of Meg Powell-Chandler as their candidate for the newly established parliamentary seat of Wells and Mendip Hills, during their meeting last Sunday afternoon.

Powell-Chandler, a West Country native, says her campaign will focus on supporting local farmers, enhancing flood defences, improving educational standards, expanding access to healthcare, and increasing investment in local infrastructure and businesses.

Her professional background includes significant roles at the centre of government, including positions in No10 Downing Street and departments like Education, Communities and Local Government, and Culture, Media & Sport.

Her experience, she notes, has equipped her with the necessary skills to effectively navigate the complexities of Parliament and government to benefit the communities of Wells and Mendip Hills.

Upon her selection, Powell-Chandler said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be selected as the Conservative candidate for Wells and Mendip Hills. Having spent weeks knocking on doors and speaking to local people they want an active champion who knows how to get things done - and I will be just that.

"I will be a bold champion for local communities and businesses, working day in and day out to deliver for the people of Wells and Mendip Hills."

She is standing against Helen Hims (Reform UK), Abi McGuire (independent), Tessa Munt (Liberal Democrats), Joe Joseph (Labour) and Peter Welsh (Green Party).
