Election confirmed for Shepton Mallet East Ward after councillor resignations

A by-election will take place in Shepton Mallet's East Ward next month following the resignation of two town councillors.
More than ten residents submitted formal requests to Somerset Council calling for an election, triggering a public vote to fill the vacant seats.
The election will be held on Thursday 23 October 2025, with polling open to all registered voters in the East Ward. The vacancies arose after the recent resignations of Councillors Robert Heaton and Tom Makin.
Shepton Mallet Town Council is now urging local residents to consider standing for election. Nomination papers must be submitted to Somerset Council by Friday 26 September.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and meet at least one of the standard eligibility criteria, such as living or working in the parish.
Successful candidates will help shape key decisions affecting the town — including local services, green spaces, events and planning matters — and represent residents' views on the council.
Full details on how to stand and what the role involves are available on the Shepton Mallet Town Council website.
