Shepton Mallet Market will remain open and continue to run to ensure essential items are available to the public.

Mendip District Council has taken the decision to continue to run the service that runs on Fridays, albeit a reduced one, following Government guidelines.

The latest advice states that, like supermarkets and local shops, markets have a crucial role to play in the food supply chain.

Traders will be selling seasonal, organic, fresh fruit and vegetables – essential for health. Fish, meat, poultry, cheese, cider, wine, butter, bread, plus cleaning products and soap, should also be available.

As tougher restrictions have been placed on people's movements, the council's market team will be managing market layouts.

Stalls will be spaced out and traders will be advised on Government rules regarding social distancing.

Cllr Nick Cottle, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said: "The health of our residents is paramount.

"It is essential that communities have access to good, fresh food. These are uncertain times for people and for our local businesses.

"The council is in contact with traders to support them during this difficult time. But be in no doubt, our market traders will rise to the challenge, and will serve our residents well, just like they always do, week-in and week-out."
