The Compassion for Cats rescue centre in Oakhill, is mourning the loss of one of its beloved residents, Lexi, following a recent break-in that has left the community in shock.

The break-in, which occurred on Monday, August 26th, led to the escape of eight cats from the centre, leaving staff and supporters heartbroken.

Lexi, a beautiful and gentle cat of 16 or 17 years, was one of the rescue's more vulnerable residents. Sadly, in the aftermath of the break-in, her health deteriorated rapidly, and it is believed she suffered a stroke. Despite the best efforts of the team at Compassion for Cats, Lexi passed away, leaving behind her sister, Shelby, who remains in the retirement pen at the centre.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Lexi," said the charity in a Facebook post. "She was such a wonderful cat, and her cuddles and smiles brought joy to everyone here. Unfortunately, the break-in was too much for her fragile health."

Lexi will be laid to rest in the centre's memorial garden, a peaceful spot where the team can remember and honour the cats who have touched their lives.

The break-in has profoundly impacted the rescue centre, which has been inundated with support from the local community. A local firm has stepped forward to offer a donation of CCTV cameras. The charity founder, Judy Knowles, has expressed her gratitude for the public's outpouring of kindness and generosity, saying, "The day it happened, I didn't like people at all, but since then, so many people have rung me with donations. It's unbelievable how many people have cared about these cats."

As the team at Compassion for Cats continues to care for the remaining cats, one cat, Elsa, is still missing. Neighbours have reported sightings of Elsa near the centre, and there is hope that she will return soon.
