Evercreech community comes together to help others this Christmas
This year, the people of Evercreech chose to give back a little something the night their Community Christmas Tree was set to be turned on.
Villager Barry O'Leary, said: "I was delighted when Evercreech had its first Community Tree in 2016.
"I said at that time the tree was for everyone and would help address loneliness.
"This year, having spoken to lots of people about the village, personally I thought would be good to have some boxes out on Saturday at the foot of our Community Christmas Tree."
This was especially timed for when the village gathered to see the light "switching on" and people could, if they wished, bring something as a community gift for those who may not have quite so much this Christmas.
It was an idea of many people, the regular "food bankers" and others who simply wanted to do something for less fortunate, and it was felt it would be a great way to be part of the festive season.
The advice given was that donations must have a long sell by date and be non-perishable.
Barry said: "Our tree switch on is well timed since this Monday will be the last day for food bank items before Christmas.
"Never having had a pop up, we didn't know what to expect but we were delighted at the overwhelming positive response."
Six boxes went off for distribution. The Food Bank spends time creating hampers for people, in Evercreech village as well as Shepton Mallet town and communities nearby.
Barry said: "Everyone is delighted - this is what our community and Christmas is all about.
"Hopefully it can become an annual pop up but, of course, the food bank is there all year round and perhaps this will highlight their hard work and people can use the many regular donations points too."
