An award-winning orthopaedic surgeon from Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre is one of just 30 orthopaedic surgery experts worldwide who have contributed to a new orthopaedic textbook for medical students, trainees and junior surgeons called Orthopaedics of the Upper and Lower Limb.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Zahid Saeed has written a chapter in the book entitled Total Knee Replacement.

In it he takes the reader through the total knee replacement journey from a description of osteoarthritis in the knee to diagnosis, success rates by age, the surgical procedure itself and post-operation considerations.

Mr Saeed joined Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre from the Royal Free Hospital in London last year.

He has a particular interest in hip and knee surgery, total knee replacement surgery, total hip replacement surgery, arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries.

He has received a number of prestigious academic awards including the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFFORT) travelling fellowship in France and Germany.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Mr Saeed has contributed to numerous book chapters in the Textbooks of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and his research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (USA).

His research work has also been presented at annual meetings of the international organisations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Las Vegas USA, British orthopaedic association (BOA) Manchester UK, European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) Geneva, Switzerland, and Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatology (SICOT) Montreal, Canada.

Mr Saeed said: "It was a pleasure to work with esteemed colleagues from around the world on this book.

"We believe that it will prove a useful resource to those at the beginning of their orthopaedic surgery careers."

Jac Ciampolini, medical director at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, said: "Zahid's excellent publication is a reflection of the importance we place on providing the very best care for our patients.

"To have such an internationally-renowned surgeon as part of our team is not only good news for us, but also for our patients who can be assured that their care is carried out by a team underpinned by unparalleled skills, expertise and experience."

Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre is the first hospital of its kind to be rated as Outstanding across the board by the Care Quality Commission.

The national Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) reported by the Health and Social Care Information Centre identified the hospital as top in the country for hip replacements, and in the top five per cent for knee replacements.

Orthopaedics of the Upper and Lower Limb is published by Springer and is available in hardback and as an ebook.
