The East Somerset Railway Steam Gala returns.

Train fans, history buffs and anyone who loves a good old-fashioned day out – mark your calendars.

The East Somerset Railway Steam Gala is back, and it's shaping up to be the biggest event of the year.

Running across the weekend of Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June, the event promises two full days of steam-powered nostalgia, set against the stunning backdrop of the Somerset countryside just outside Shepton Mallet.

The big headline? 1719 'Lady Nan' will be back in action offering Driver for Fifteen experiences, giving you the chance to climb aboard and actually drive a steam engine. You'll want to book ahead for that one – it's always a sell-out.

The gala will feature a packed timetable with multiple locomotives, behind-the-scenes access to engine sheds, and signal box demonstrations – so if you've ever wondered how it all works, now's your chance to see it in action. There'll also be skilled volunteers showing off what it takes to keep the line steaming ahead.

New for 2025, visitors can step inside a restored railway carriage to explore 'The Man Who Loved Giants' – a brand-new exhibition celebrating the life of the railway's legendary founder David Shepherd.

And it's not just about the trains. Your ticket also includes access to the David Shepherd Discovery Centre, the Heritage Museum, a traditional Victorian ticket office and waiting room, plus a workshop viewing area and station café.

There's free parking, the site is wheelchair accessible, and dogs ride for free – so feel free to bring the whole crew.

Organisers are warning that pre-booking is strongly advised, with previous events selling out fast. To get your tickets, call 01749 880417 or visit www.eastsomersetrailway.com.

Trains depart from Cranmore Station, just outside Shepton Mallet – and with the scent of coal in the air and whistles at the ready, it's a weekend not to miss.
