There is traffic congestion in Shepton Mallet this morning (August 2) as the A37 is closed at Downside following a crash.

The incident happened at about 9.45am at the junction of the A37 and the B3136 heading into town.

The A37 is closed from the Charlton Crossroads to the Beacon Crossroads at the top of Long Hill, and police are at the scene.

Due to the closure, there are traffic hold-ups throughout Shepton Mallet, with satellite traffic cameras showing queues on the A361 in both directions from the Charlton Crossroads, back to the centre of town in one direction and to the bottom of Doulting Hill in the other.

The B3136 has delays back to the viaduct, and the A37 itself has queues back to the Cannard's Grave Roundabout.

It is not know at this time how long the road will be closed, and motorists are being advised to find an alternative route.
