Students all across the Shepton Mallet area have been working together with storyteller David Reakes to create their own immersive performance.

Six schools are working on the project which is led by Bowlish Infant School, Make the Sunshine Community Interest Company and five partner schools.

This week David has visited Shepton Mallet Infants School, Croscombe and St Aldhelm's in Doulting.

Next week he will be going to St Paul's Junior School, Stoke St Michael and Bowlish Infant School performing the story of the Three Keys and sharing with students the secrets of what makes up a good story.

Children have then had the opportunity to work with David to help write and create their own narrative.

The story follows a young girl, Rosie, who lives in Shepton Mallet and who wants to explore the world – she sets off to travel and we follow her journey across many lands and planets created by the students before she returns back to Somerset bringing with her some magical findings.

The storytelling sessions have been funded by Literature Works with funding for the wider project being provided by the Arts Council, Shepton Mallet Town Council, Wells Festival of Literature and Mendip Community Fund.

"It's been wonderful to see the amazing imaginations of all the students coming to the fore," said Louise Lappin-Cook from Make the Sunshine.

"They really have been incredible and some of the ideas have been so impressive and detailed – the students demonstrated a really good understanding of how to create a character and had some amazing ideas about what the world might be like if we travelled into the future. We are so excited to see where the story goes."

Students will perform the final performance on March 6 at St Paul's School. As well as experiencing lots of theatre shows this term as part of the project, students will also have the opportunity to work with puppet makers and performing arts professionals.

The final performance will also give Shepton students the opportunity to perform alongside professional companies, puppeteers and actors who they will select and commission to help tell their story which will be shared in a public showcase.
