Our property section is full of great homes in the Shepton Mallet area.

Here is our top pick for the week:

Country house with indoor pool, nine acres of land and a tennis court in West Compton, offered for sale by Roderick Thomas.

This early Victorian house (not listed) has been extensively improved and has excellent, well-appointed accommodation including a galleried hall, cloakrooms, four reception rooms, a large kitchen with dining, gym, indoor pool, boot room, double garage, six bedrooms - main bedroom suite (dressing room and two bathrooms), five further bedrooms (three en suite) - plus attic rooms suitable for further bedrooms/bathrooms.

The house already has planning permission for an additional eastern wing fronting the lake that would comprise two additional rooms.

The stunning grounds of around four acres include formal walled gardens, a kitchen garden, an informal wild garden with a small lake, lawns, a hard tennis court, cricket net, football pitch and a pavilion.

Beyond the gardens is a five-acre meadow overlooked by the house. In all the property totals more than nine acres.

East Burford House was originally the coach house and stable block for Burford House which stands a little further west. The buildings were redeveloped in the 1800s to create an impressive family home.

The entrance drive leads in through landscaped grounds bounded by park railings on the north side with gently sloping meadows and woodland beyond.

The front drive continues through an impressive gateway with stone pillars and ballustraded walls to a carriage sweep in front of the house.

This is a very handsome building with pitched tiled roof, limestone elevations and sandstone mullions, portico pillars and doorway architraves.

In recent years the house has been the subject of extensive works including plumbing, heating, wiring, conversion of the old study/dining room into a pool and gym, as well as significant painting, refurbishment and modernisation elsewhere within the house. The grounds have also received great attention and are an absolute delight.

The entrance to the house is on the north side with double doors to a porch opening to a large galleried reception hall extending to the full height of the house and giving access to the four reception rooms which all face south with beautiful views.

Also off the hall is a cloakroom. The drawing room is very light and airy and has a Doulting stone open fireplace.

Two sets of double doorway lead through from the adjoining games room and the two rooms together create a wonderful entertaining area with a garden door to the terrace.

Double doors open from the hall into the library which is a stunning room with a large bay window (with window seats) and bookshelves.

Again, double doors lead into the adjacent sitting room. This is the fourth reception room and is equally suited as a formal dining room if preferred.

It's next to the kitchen and has a garden door, a wood burner in an inset fireplace and a wine store.

The kitchen and dining room has a good range of units and appliances. The dining area is set within a large bay window area.

Leading off the kitchen are a pantry, utility room and a boot room with a garden loo close to the back door.

This leads out into a very useful loggia conveniently adjacent to the driveway, and has a charging point for electric cars.

Next to the kitchen, and also south facing, is a large studio currently used as a gym (equipment not included).

The south facing wall has a full width of windows and is ideally suited to many uses including a garden room, playroom, office, artist's studio, etc.

Adjoining is the pool room which has an Elite Endless Pool - 7ft by 14 ft - fitted with overhead and below water mirrors and programmable twin jets controlled either by remote control or via an app.

The room has air conditioning, roof skylights (electric) and French doors to the terrace. There's also a door through into the large double garage and store.

A staircase from the main hall leads to a large galleried landing which serves four bedrooms, which are all south facing with wonderful views.

The master suite has a bedroom with fitted wardrobes and a dressing room totally fitted out with wardrobes and cupboards. Within the suite are a bathroom and a shower room.

The other three bedrooms on this floor are all en suite, one with its own dressing room and bathroom accessible through secret doors, hidden in a panel wall.

Upstairs from one of these bedrooms, accessed via a spiral staircase, are the fifth and sixth bedroom and attic rooms.

The house already has permission and plans drawn up to relocate the stairway and convert part of the attic space into an additional bathroom.

The house faces due south with climbing roses, wisteria and a number of doors opening out on to large terraces with ornamental ponds and flower beds.

Steps lead down to an exquisitely landscaped walled garden with lawns, a canal with an avenue of espaliered fruit trees, rose beds, herbaceous beds and numerous shrubs.

Screened and sheltered by yew and laurel hedges is a well designed kitchen garden with raised beds, a fruit cage and greenhouse. The gardens have an abundance of fruit trees including apples, pears and figs.

Adjacent is a garden storage shed suitable for housing ride on mowers and other garden equipment.

A spacious pavilion, which could also be used as a home office, overlooks the newly resurfaced tennis court and the adjacent cricket net and football pitch.

Beyond is a wild garden and woodland area with pathways around a small lake. Originally a Victorian garden it's now totally in line with the current move to wilding.

On the southern side of the gardens lies a second greenhouse and across the lane is a meadow of about five acres planted as parkland.
