Local events are coming thick and fast as we approach the weekend, and there are plenty of activities on offer in and around Shepton Mallet.

Here's a rundown of what's happening in the area, including some exciting options for families and nature lovers alike.

Nature enthusiasts can join in a springtime walk through Ham Woods on Sunday 16th April. The walk is a little over 3 miles and will take in the beauty of Bluebells, other spring flowers, and newly opened tramways. The start and finish point is Rock Farm, where The Good Life Projects C.I.C farm shop will be open for coffee and other produce. Please note that the walk includes some inclines and may be muddy, so appropriate footwear is essential.

If you're a fan of the paranormal, don't miss the Ghost Hunt at Shepton Mallet Prison on Saturday 15th April. Descend into the depths of the prison and listen to tales of torture, murder, and hangings, with renowned ghost hunters Dale and Paul Investigates leading the investigation. Tickets cost £55.00 plus booking fee.

For something a little more lighthearted, check out the award-winning loop artist She Robot, who will be performing live at The Art Bank Cafe on Friday 14th April. Suzy Condrad creates songs using a loop pedal and a variety of instruments and her voice. She honed her craft busking on the streets of Camden, won the UK Boss Looping Championship in 2011, and recently chose the name 'She, Robot' to reflect her suspicion that artificial intelligence will relatively soon take over the world.

On Saturday 15th April, Panta Rei Dance will present Make Me Dance at Croscombe Village Hall. The show is a choreographed concert exploring the drive within all of us to create, through movement, sound and text. The production is an immersive dance theatre performance where the audience is part of the performance space.

Fancy catching a film? At Wells Film Centre you can catch up with the following releases:

  • Super Mario Bros [PG]
  • Air [15]
  • John Wick: Chapter 4 [15]
  • Mummies [U]
  • Allelujah [12A]
  • Good - NT Live [15]
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves [12A]

And save the date - dog lovers can enjoy a weekend of fun at The Big Bark 2023, taking place at the purpose-built Bath & West Showground from 22nd to 23rd April. There will be plenty of activities for everyone, from shopping stalls to expert talks on obedience, wellbeing, training and diet. Admission is from £10 per person, and families are encouraged to bring their own dogs or borrow one for the occasion.
