Walkers put their best foot forward for Mendip Ramblers Walking Festival

Most readers will recall some very wet August Bank Holidays, but not this year! While we are aware of the dangers of drought the warm sun, and tea and cake of course, made the annual Mendip Ramblers walking festival very enjoyable for all who came to Stratton-on-the-Fosse.

Over the three day weekend walkers of all ages and different abilities discovered this quiet, unspoiled part of the Mendip Hills - an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With ages ranging from 6 months to 6 years to 86, about 70 people joined in on each day. Whilst most were reasonably local some came from further afield - from Dorset and Devon, and Northumberland.

Some of course were seasoned walkers, happy to walk the hills for 12 miles - others enjoyed more leisurely wandering - and the afternoon family walks were very well supported. Very enthusiastic children and keen dogs joined in, all well looked after by walk leaders and back markers.

As always there is a lot of often "hidden" work - the catering team, the car parkers, the route planners and checkers and the sign makers and placers. Thanks to all who made this festival happen!

As autumn approaches, bringing with it uncertain weather and other difficulties Mendip Ramblers will be out and about in the lovely Somerset countryside. Walking is good for us and enjoyable and free - so we hope to welcome new walkers (and new walk leaders). Please take a look at our website - www.mendipramblers.co.uk - all are welcome.
