A vehicle was deliberately set on fire following a crash in between Stoney Stratton and Westcombe last night (December 15).

Just after 5.30pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control were called by the police to a vehicle fire following a road traffic collision in Westcombe Road, Stoney Stratton.

The vehicle had overturned and there were also suspicions that somebody could be trapped inside.

Pumping appliances, two from Shepton Mallet and one from Frome, with the heavy rescue unit and supporting appliance from Glastonbury were mobilised. An ambulance was also requested.

On arrival the overturned vehicle was well alight, and firefighters deployed three hose reels to extinguish the fire and used hydraulic rescue equipment to gain access.

Fortunately the occupants had released themselves. Firefighters assisted the police by using a thermal imaging camera to check the surrounding area.

The cause of the fire was recorded as deliberate.
