A rare glimpse behind the scenes at a bustling Somerset recycling facility is set to be unveiled next month, offering the public an intriguing opportunity to understand exactly what happens after their recycling is collected.

Evercreech Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) near Shepton Mallet, which processes an impressive 33,000 tonnes of recycling annually, is partnering with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK and Somerset Council to offer the public five free tours on a single day. Scheduled between 10am and 3pm, spaces are limited, and eager visitors are advised to book early to secure a spot.

The tours are part of the national Heritage Open Days festival and will run every hour from 10 am, with the last one at 2 pm. Tickets are available directly from Eventbrite.

Visitors will witness the inner workings of the recycling lorries, the sophisticated sorting machines that separate plastics from tins and cans, and learn about the newly upgraded technology and machinery installed in 2020. The facility's dedicated staff will guide the tours, shedding light on each process and answering any queries.

Evercreech MRF's ability to process the equivalent weight of around 2,000 double-decker buses annually makes it a vital part of the county's green infrastructure. Visitors will also gain insights into the potential issues and fire risks associated with incorrect disposal of items like vapes, batteries, and gas canisters.

Somerset Council's Executive Lead Member for Environment & Climate Change, Councillor Dixie Darch, expressed enthusiasm for the tours, stating: "Knowing that the right thing is being done with the materials is a key motivator for getting people recycling. These visits will really bring that to life."

Fred Stinchcombe, Regional Production Manager for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, shared the excitement, adding that they often receive interesting questions from residents. "We welcome the opportunity to showcase our role in reducing waste and how we get the recycling prepared to be turned into new packaging and products. We look forward to welcoming as many visitors as possible to Evercreech in September."

With a strong recycling record in Somerset, the upcoming tours offer a unique chance to connect residents with the intricate processes behind their recycling efforts, further strengthening community engagement and awareness.
