Trees and power lines down as Storm Darragh batters Somerset

7th Dec 2024 By Laura Linham

Storm Darragh has brought severe disruption to Somerset and the South West, with strong winds and heavy rain causing fallen trees, power cuts, and travel chaos. A red weather warning, issued by the Met Office, remains in place until 11am today, with gusts of up to 90mph reported across parts of the region.

The northern stretch of the M5 is expected to be significantly affected, according to National Highways, while several local roads are blocked by fallen trees. A resident in Worle, North Somerset, shared a photo of a tree brought down near the Sainsbury's supermarket, adding to reports of similar incidents across the county.

Somerset Council has confirmed that around 7,000 properties are currently without power, with the National Grid warning that further outages are possible as the storm continues. Residents are being urged to stay indoors where possible, secure outdoor items, and check on vulnerable neighbours if safe to do so.

Weather warnings and travel advice

The Met Office has issued multiple warnings, including a red alert for damaging winds that could pose a risk to life. A broader amber warning also covers much of the west coast of the UK, stretching from Scotland to Cornwall.

Fallen debris, large waves, and high winds are expected to cause further travel disruption, with delays and cancellations likely for bus, train, and ferry services. The Met Office recommends avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary.

Drivers are being advised to stay off the roads where possible. RAC Breakdown spokeswoman Alice Simpson said: "We strongly advise drivers to postpone their journeys if they can. Exposed rural and coastal routes will be particularly hazardous."

Emergency preparations

With over 100 flood warnings and alerts issued across the UK, residents are urged to prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs in advance. The Met Office also recommends securing outdoor items such as bins, garden furniture, and Christmas decorations to prevent further damage.

The storm is expected to ease later today, but the focus remains on safety as Somerset and the wider South West navigate the worst of Storm Darragh's impact.
