Shepton Mallet Town Council Chairman's Column: A preview of an exciting weekend of events

Freedom Day has come and gone but if your family is anything like mine, the continuing affects of the virus are almost more apparent now than ever before.

All of our schools unfortunately succumbed to the self-isolation need that is sweeping the country.

So although schools should have finished term tomorrow, many children are at home now. Even more reason to keep activities relatively low-key and local.

We are now in the middle of the Summer in Shepton programme and last week saw the wonderfully well organised All the World's Our Playground event. Many thanks to Lou Lappin-Cook and her team for pulling it together.

I've never silent disco-danced down Town Street before. At least, only in my dreams!

This weekend sees another event, again outside of course, but one for all BMXers, scooters and skaters.

Professional wheeled-sport enthusiasts Camp Rubicon will be on hand at the West Shepton Skate Park and they'll be running competitions, giving training and generally celebrating the great facility we have up there.

There'll be music, drinks and an ice cream van. It's completely free entry and non-ticketed so pop along between 10am and 4pm on Saturday!

For those not into sports of a wheeled variety, there'll be hula-hooping in Collett Park between 3pm and 4pm (book online via the Shepton Mallet Town Council Facebook page).

Finally, Saturday also sees the third Love your Library day. Starting at 10.30am in the library, there'll be story-telling with the Tall Tails Theatre Company, performances from The Two Steves, expert guidance about writing and self-publishing, and an appearance from Jamila Gavin, winner of the Costa Book of the Year award (formerly the Booker prize). Again, go to the town council Facebook page for details or our website.

I hope that the series of small but local events are appreciated by the community and enable us to have fun while staying safe.

Until next time.

Matt Harrison, Chairperson
