Somerset is under a yellow thunderstorm warning this evening after another day of hot weather across the county. The Met Office warning runs from 6pm until 11.59pm today, Thursday, 25 June.

The warning covers Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Plymouth and Torbay. The Met Office says scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move towards south-west England during Thursday evening and night.

Forecasters say many areas will miss the worst of the weather. Where thunderstorms do develop, they may bring sudden gusty winds of 50 to 60mph, frequent lightning, hail and heavy rain.

The Met Office says the impacts are slightly more likely towards the south coast of Devon and Cornwall.

In Somerset, the warning means there is a risk of disruption in places rather than a forecast for widespread storms across the county.

The heaviest rain looks set to hit the area at around 1am on Friday morning.

The warning comes after heavy rain earlier this week caused localised flooding in parts of the area.

People travelling this evening are advised to check the latest forecast and road conditions before setting off. The Met Office also advises securing loose garden items before gusty winds arrive and moving to a safe enclosed place if thunder is heard while outside.

The Met Office says driving conditions could be affected by spray, standing water or hail if storms develop. Longer journey times by car and bus are possible, and some short-term loss of power and other services may occur.

Friday is expected to feel fresher after the worst of the heat, although showers may continue in places as the system moves north. The Met Office warning remains in place until 11.59pm tonight, with people advised to keep checking the forecast if they are travelling or heading out this evening.

The UK Health Security Agency has extended its red heat-health alert for the South West until 11 pm on Friday, 26 June. Officials say the hot weather could put extra pressure on hospitals, care homes and social care services, and could be dangerous for everyone, especially older people. People are also being warned to take care near water, as the risk of cold-water shock and drowning can increase during very hot weather.
