A new independent shop dedicated to UK-grown plants and eco-conscious gifts is set to open in Shepton Mallet later this month.

The Black Thistle will open its doors on Thursday 27 March at 10 Market Place, as part of the town's retail incubator programme.

The botanical-themed store was selected from 27 applicants to take part in the scheme, which supports entrepreneurs to trial high street businesses rent-free for nine months.

The incubator project, run by charity Interim Spaces, offers successful applicants a £1,500 capital grant and access to business mentorship, with the aim of helping them transition to a permanent commercial space.

The Black Thistle, founded by Shepton resident Ami Hensman, will offer a carefully curated collection of UK-grown plants, sustainable homeware, and eco-friendly gifts.

Ami said: "When I moved to Shepton Mallet four years ago, I found more than just a home—I found a community that embraces creativity, sustainability, and collaboration. The Black Thistle is a reflection of that journey: a space where plants, people, and thoughtfully made goods come together to create something special. I'm so excited to open our doors and share this with Shepton and beyond."

The shop will host a soft launch on Thursday 27 March from 4pm to 6pm, inviting members of the public to explore the new space and meet the team.

The Black Thistle is the latest business to benefit from the 10 Market Place project, which forms part of wider efforts to revitalise Shepton Mallet's town centre and support local enterprise.
