The East Somerset Railway in Cranmore is looking forward to providing a bank holiday weekend of fun and entertainment for all ages when it presents The Way We Were from Saturday August 28 to Monday August 30.
Many wartime re-enactment groups representing British, German and American forces will be in attendance together with an ARP post, 1940s Living History, a German field station and a 'bombed out' family.
Costumed promenaders dressed in period costume from the mid 20th century eras will be in attendance to enhance the atmosphere of the event.
Watch out for an afternoon 'skirmish' on the line when the opposing armies confront each other.
Military and civilian vehicles will be on display and there will be bus rides around the Cranmore area. For younger visitors there will be Punch and Judy each day and a craft area where you can play games that would have been played during the 1940s and make an evacuee name label and gas mask container. A new attraction at the ESR site this year is our Waiting Room which has been restored to its mid 20th century hey-day and a ticket office which strongly evokes the working life of a country station master from a similar era. There is also a new museum which tells the true stories of characters and events on our local railways together with displays of interesting rail and steam artefacts and a Trainspotter's corner. Car parking is available on the East Somerset Railway site. Tickets cost £14 (adult), £13 (Concession), £12 (child), £45 (Family of 2 adults/2 children). Train times are 11.00, 12.00, 1.00, 2.00 and 3.30. To book tickets in advance, visit www.eastsomersetrailway.com or contact [email protected] or telephone 01749 880417.
