The 2020 Mid-Somerset Show in Shepton Mallet is the latest major event to be cancelled
The Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Mid-Somerset Show in Shepton Mallet due to the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.
The society's chairman, Ian Harvey, confirmed the cancellation in a statement issued today (May 12).
He said: "Following the latest advice from the government it is clear that large gatherings, such as our show, are unlikely to be allowed for many months and it is therefore my sad duty to advise that this year's Mid-Somerset Show, due to take place on Sunday August 16, is cancelled.
"Our priority is to protect the health and safety of our visitors, members, traders, exhibitors, staff and all those involved in preparing and delivering the show, and with this in mind the executive committee have made this difficult decision.
"With virtually every other agricultural show cancelling this year, we would struggle to attract our usual volume of livestock entries, many of our not so young judges, stewards and helpers would be unavailable and visitor numbers would inevitable be significantly reduced – all leading to a loss-making show, even if we were allowed to run the event.
"To all of you who have supported or offered help for the show this year I offer our thanks – and hope that we can rely on your further assistance next year.
"We must now look forward to the 2021 show on Sunday August 15 – the first on our new show field."
If anyone has any questions, they can contact the show secretary on 07980 284057.
