Storm Dennis: Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Market cancelled but Festival will go on
The Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Market, that was due to be held on Sunday (February 16), has been cancelled due to the anticipated impact of Storm Dennis.
However, the main Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival will go on, with only a couple of the outdoor planned events being pulled from the schedule.
A spokesperson for the market said: "We would like to assure you that this decision was not taken lightly but with a yellow weather warning in place and for the safety of the general public and traders it was decided that this was our best course of action. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
The Snowdrop Festival organisers are determined to not let the adverse weather conditions deter them, and the town has rallied around in support to make sure this happens.
A festival spokesperson said: "Despite weather predictions and general gloom about Storm Dennis, the Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival will go ahead, undeterred.
"Organisers met to review arrangements and agreed, with some minor programme tweaks, that the festival must go on.
"Thanks to the generosity of Cabbages and Roses in providing a last minute indoor venue at their soon to be new premises in Town Street, and the fabulous availability of space in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, and the Art Bank, much of the original programme has been retained.
"Only the activities that were to take place outside in the open air - the heritage walks, the snowdrop ramble, and the open gardens at houses associated with James Allen's life - have been cancelled."
The festival takes place on Saturday (February 15) and Sunday, and among the attractions, there will be a children's fancy dress parade, a Gardening Question Time, a Photography and Poetry Exhibition, a Song Competition and a Floral Ball.
