Shepton Mallet's public toilets saved from closure
In a last-minute turn of events, the public toilets off Commercial Road in Shepton Mallet, which were set to close on April 1st, have been spared, thanks to the town council's decision to allocate additional budget.
Somerset Council had initially announced plans to close several public conveniences across the county as part of cost-cutting measures. However, following backlash and concern from the community, a reassessment of Shepton Mallet Town Council's budget has allowed for the safeguarding of these vital facilities.
Despite the good news, the council has warned that there will be a short-term impact on the cleaning schedule of the saved facilities. Due to the rapid development of these plans, the toilets will operate on a reduced cleaning rota until more permanent measures can be implemented. The council is working diligently to ensure that the impact on the public is minimised during this interim period.
The decision has been met with relief from the residents of Shepton Mallet, who had voiced strong opposition to the proposed closures. The public toilets off Commercial Road are particularly valued by shoppers and visitors, playing a crucial role in maintaining the town's appeal.
