Pet owners in Wells are being warned to keep a close eye on their furry companions this Christmas — or risk an emergency vet visit.

Nurture Veterinary Hospital says it sees a sharp rise in avoidable cases every December, as animals get into trouble with everything from mistletoe to mince pies.

The clinic, which covers Wells and Weston, has issued a festive safety alert after treating pets for chocolate poisoning, tinsel ingestion, and cooked bone injuries in recent weeks.

A spokesperson said: "Every year we deal with emergencies that could've been prevented. A few simple precautions go a long way."

Top hazards include:

  • Toxic food – Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and booze can all be fatal
  • Decorations – Tinsel, ribbons and baubles can cause gut blockages if swallowed
  • Cooked bones – Turkey leftovers can splinter and puncture the gut
  • Poisonous plants – Mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettias are all risky

Vets are also urging people not to share fatty trimmings or sugary desserts with pets, as these can trigger pancreatitis, dental problems and weight gain.

"Keep bins shut, clear up scraps, and don't leave pets alone near party food," the clinic added. "If you think your pet's eaten something dangerous, call us immediately."
