Up close: La Bella brings authentic Italian flavour – and family warmth – to Shepton

Shepton Mallet's high street has a new flavour – and it's straight from the heart of Italy.
Family-run restaurant La Bella has quickly made its mark since opening in November, winning over locals with its authentic cuisine, warm atmosphere and commitment to community.
The restaurant is the creation of 25-year-old Sidian Zyberi and his wife Eva, who moved to Shepton to be closer to family. A seasoned restaurateur, Sidian has been in the business since the age of 13, starting out in his uncle's restaurant and later working with his parents in Abergavenny. Now, he's brought that passion – and a close-knit team of relatives – to Shepton.
"We were looking around for the right location when the former Wine Vaults came up," said Sidian. "It was a bit of a leap of faith, but we're really glad we did it. Everyone in Shepton – not just our customers, but other businesses too – has been incredibly supportive."

That support has gone both ways. La Bella tries to source its ingredients locally wherever possible, including fresh veg from the Little Farm Shed Shop. "Their prices are unbeatable," said Sidian. "We want to keep our prices affordable too – good food shouldn't be out of reach."

Their lunchtime menu, offering two courses for £13.95, has proven popular, alongside a happy hour cocktail deal of two for £13. But it's not just about value – the family puts real care into every dish, from pasta to soups and handmade pizzas.

La Bella is very much a family affair. Sidian runs the front of house (and steps into the kitchen when needed), Eva works the bar and welcomes guests, while his mum, aunties, and Eva's sister-in-law are all part of the kitchen and front-of-house team. "We're learning what people want, what's popular, and adjusting the menu all the time," said Sidian. "We've hit the targets we set for ourselves and we're really happy with how it's going."

They've already refurbished much of the former Wine Vaults building – with a fresh look, new kitchen, and more upgrades planned, including a function room for private parties by the end of the summer.
"We're here for the long haul," said Sidian. "Shepton has welcomed us so warmly. The Art Bank, the barber shop, the farm shop – everyone's been kind, helpful, and genuinely rooting for us. That's something I haven't experienced in other towns I've worked in. I'm very happy we came here. The people are lovely, and they want to see the place succeed as much as we do."
La Bella is also a new sponsor of Shepton Mallet Nub News – and a proud new part of the community.
