Somerset Council has revealed the average cost of repairing a pothole on the county's roads — and it's more than £120 per job.

The figure was shared in response to a question from Conservative councillor Diogo Rodrigues, who quizzed highways bosses at a full council meeting in Bridgwater.

Cllr Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste, admitted the numbers vary depending on location, depth and urgency — but confirmed the average repair cost between April and October 2025 was £123.32, dropping to £98.63 for a single pothole.

Somerset Council maintains most of the county's roads, excluding the M5, A303 and A36 which are handled by National Highways. The authority is also tasked with overseeing the standard of new estate roads and carrying out resurfacing and maintenance across the network.

The figures come as the Department for Transport (DfT) rolled out a new national scoring system for local road funding. Somerset Council landed an amber rating, placing 26th out of 153 authorities.

The county scored green for the condition of its road network and wider best practice — but was rated red on its spending measure, despite being on track to spend 98% of its annual DfT capital grant.

In 2025/26, more than 34 miles of road are due to be resurfaced, with nearly 115 miles set for preventative surface treatments.
