Somerset is mourning one of its greatest sporting names after Olympic champion Mary Rand died aged 86. Rand, who was born in Wells and later attended Millfield School in Street on an athletics scholarship, died on Friday, 27 March 2026.

The former athlete made history at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when she became the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She took long jump gold with a world-record leap of 6.76 metres and also won silver in the pentathlon and bronze in the 4x100m relay.

That stunning haul made her the first British woman to win three medals at a single Olympic Games. She went on to be voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 1964 and was appointed MBE in the 1965 New Year Honours.

Born Mary Denise Bignal on 10 February 1940, she grew up in Wells before her sporting talent earned her a place at Millfield. She excelled across several events as a teenager and quickly emerged as one of Britain's brightest athletics stars.

Her achievements remained a source of pride in her home city long after her retirement. In Wells Market Place, a plaque marks out the full 6.76 metres of her world-record jump using Olympic rings set into the pavement.

Rand was later awarded the Freedom of the City of Wells in 2012, recognising both her sporting success and her lasting connection to the city.

After Tokyo, she added more major honours, including Commonwealth gold in 1966. Injury later ended her hopes of reaching another Olympics, but her place in British sporting history was already secure.

Her death will be felt far beyond Somerset, but in Wells and Street she will be remembered not just as a global sporting icon, but as a local girl who reached the very top.
