Could the Somerset Levels become England's next National Park? CPRE Somerset will put that sizeable question to the public at Glastonbury Town Hall on Thursday, 1 October, with a free evening discussion beginning at 7.30 pm.

The event, called The Big Conversation, forms part of CPRE's centenary year and will explore what National Park status could mean for the Levels, its landscape, wildlife and communities. Journalist and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, president of CPRE Somerset, will host the discussion.

A panel including CPRE, Somerset Wildlife Trust, the Somerset Eel Recovery Project and Visit Somerset will discuss the possible benefits and impacts of National Park status. Organisers are also inviting members of the audience to come armed with questions — and an open mind.

CPRE was at the forefront of the campaign for the creation of Britain's National Parks during the early 20th century and is marking 100 years of campaigning for the countryside. A century on, its Somerset branch says it wants to start a conversation about whether the Levels could be worthy of the same level of recognition.

The charity says National Park status is a complex idea which would take time and require support and partnership from a wide range of people and organisations. For now, the emphasis is firmly on discussion rather than presenting the proposal as a done deal.

The Big Conversation will take place from 7.30 pm until 9.30 pm at Glastonbury Town Hall on Thursday, 1 October. Entry is free, although donations towards CPRE Somerset's costs and charitable work are invited, and advance booking is advised through CPRE Somerset.
