Solitary hikes turn into community lifeline for Dulcote man

For years, Alex Gillespie was known for trekking the Somerset hills with only his dog Meg by his side. Now, the 43-year-old from Dulcote is leading a popular walking group for colleagues at Charlie Bigham's, turning his solo strolls into a supportive space for talking about mental health.

What began as casual walks with one or two coworkers has become an established part of life at the company's Dulcote Quarry kitchen. Since qualifying as a Mental Health First Aider, Alex has made it easier for team members to open up, whether on countryside trails or short walks around the site.

"Walking makes it easier to talk," he said. "You're side by side, not face to face, and you're distracted by what's around you. People talk without even realising they're opening up."

With Meg the Springer Spaniel mix acting as an unofficial team mascot, the group often pauses to forage for wild garlic, sloe berries or mushrooms—adding a foodie flair to the excursions. "I do work for a food-loving company after all," Alex added.

The initiative is part of a wider wellbeing effort at Charlie Bigham's, which now has 16 trained Mental Health First Aiders and plans to train more in 2025. The company was recently named one of the UK's Top 100 Best Workplaces for Wellbeing.

"Sometimes something as simple as taking someone for a walk around the building is enough," Alex said. "One of the guys tried that and was amazed—by the end, his colleague had opened up about family issues."

Charlie Bigham's CEO, Patrick Cairns, praised the company's culture of support and innovation, while People Director Pamela Schmid said the business is committed to creating a sustainable and people-focused workplace.

Alex's walking group continues to grow, and he hopes to welcome company founder Charlie Bigham on a walk soon — weather permitting.
