A Shepton Mallet primary school has been given the go‑ahead to put up a steel-framed canopy—despite sitting in the middle of the town's conservation area.
The new shelter will link a modular classroom to the main East Wing at St Paul's CofE VC Junior School, just off Paul Street. Somerset Council approved the plans on Monday, 14 October 2025.
The school, a Grade II listed site in the heart of Shepton, needed full planning permission due to its heritage status. But planners backed the bid, ruling the canopy wouldn't harm the historic setting or cause any issues for neighbours.
Drawings show a simple steel frame with a polycarbonate roof. It'll sit in a former play area, tucked behind existing buildings and out of sight from the road.
A report from the school's planning agent described the proposal as "modest and appropriate," adding: "The canopy is a sustainable addition that will have no negative impact on the school's listed setting."
The council agreed—so long as materials match what's been approved and work starts within three years.
The school has had several planning applications over the years, including new classrooms and tree works. The latest addition won't increase pupil numbers or affect the main playground.
