Shepton Mallet is set to witness the restoration of its historic water fountain located at the Market Place, a feature that has been dormant for over 50 years.

Approved this week by Somerset Council, the project aims to breathe new life into the fountain, which is situated at the juncture of Great Ostry road and High Street, within the cobbled confines of the Market Place.

Specialised in stonework conservation, Cliveden Conservation will oversee the restoration efforts, having previously conducted minor works on the fountain.

The restoration will involve updating the fountain's water supply system to comply with The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Bristol Water, the local freshwater supplier, has approved a tap design that meets all necessary health and safety standards, including protection against environmental contamination and mouth contact.

The fountain's internal piping will be replaced to conform to current water regulations, necessitating the careful removal of its west-side bowl—a task Cliveden Conservation is equipped for, thanks to their previous work on the fountain in 2005.

Additionally, a small area around the fountain's base may need excavation to connect to the water supplier's boundary box, ensuring any disruptions to the surrounding stone pavement are minimally invasive and aesthetically respectful.

You can find the approved application here.
