Shepton Mallet Town Council steps in to support The Art Bank with £15,000 grant

Shepton Mallet Town Council has agreed to award £15,000 in financial support to The Art Bank, in a move that could help secure the future of one of the town's most important community spaces.
At a recent meeting, councillors voted in favour of the grant after hearing about the financial pressures facing the not-for-profit arts venue, which has been struggling with rising costs and organisational challenges. The council said the decision reflected its recognition of The Art Bank's cultural, social and economic value to Shepton Mallet.
Based in a former high street bank building, The Art Bank is known for its exhibitions, creative workshops, performances and sustainability initiatives. It also hosts a range of community-focused activities including a repair café, a community café, and a weekly art group for people with learning difficulties.
Art Bank Director Abby Young said the grant offers "precious breathing space" as the organisation works on a new business plan. "We are incredibly grateful to Shepton Mallet Town Council for recognising the value of The Art Bank and stepping in with this vital support," she said.
"This funding gives us precious breathing space to continue serving our community while we work hard behind the scenes to secure our long-term future. The Art Bank belongs to Shepton Mallet — it's a space where creativity, inclusivity, and environmental action come together. With the community's continued support, we are determined to build a sustainable future for this unique space."
The Art Bank is currently working with SPARK Somerset, a voluntary sector support organisation, to strengthen its governance and improve financial systems. It has also received funding from the Somerset Community Foundation to carry out a community consultation later this year.
The town council's grant will be used to cover urgent operational costs, helping to prevent immediate closure. The Art Bank is now urging local residents to get involved — whether by volunteering, donating, or simply attending upcoming events.
