Shepton Mallet has been named the safest spot for cyclists in Somerset, with zero reported bike thefts.

A new study, conducted by the online coaching programme Thighs Club using crimerate.co.uk data, showed an alarming 286 bicycle thefts in Taunton, earning it the dubious title of the worst place in Somerset to leave your bike.

Alex Dowsett, the founder of Thighs Club and a former British cyclist, expressed concern over the high theft rates across the county.

He said: "As an elite cyclist who depends on my bike, seeing the bicycle thefts across Somerset is truly disheartening."

He has issued advice to Somerset cyclists on how to keep their bikes safe:

"Invest in quality locks, including a sturdy U-lock paired with a cable for securing both wheels and the frame. Register your bike on databases like BikeRegister and Immobilise.

"Don't leave it unattended for long stretches. And check if your home insurance covers bicycle theft."
