Shepton Mallet to honour heroes of the Battle of Britain 85 years on

Shepton Mallet will pay tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Britain this month with a special service and wreath laying.
A multi-denomination service will be held at St Michael's Roman Catholic Church on Park Road at 11am on Sunday 14 September, marking 85 years since the famous air campaign that changed the course of the Second World War.
The ceremony, organised by RAFA-MSB, will remember the RAF's role in 1940 as well as the sacrifice of air crews in later conflicts. After the service, wreaths will be laid at the town's cenotaph.
The Battle of Britain saw the RAF stand against relentless Luftwaffe attacks in the summer of 1940. Churchill's "Few" — the young pilots who held the line — helped secure a vital victory and prevent invasion. It remains a defining moment of national resilience.
The event is open to everyone, with veterans, reservists, RAFA members and members of the public all invited to take part in the commemoration.
RAFA-MSB, which covers Shepton Mallet and surrounding areas, said the service is a chance for the whole community to remember those who served.
