The Bell Inn, a historic pub at the heart of Shepton Mallet, has been closed since 2020 following a series of issues, but there is now a community-driven initiative to save and revitalise it.

Local residents and business owners are being called upon to support a bid to have the pub listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV).

Closed due to problems ranging from anti-social behaviour to allegations of illegal activities, The Bell Inn has been a prominent fixture in Shepton Mallet's town centre. With the property likely to be put up for sale, there is a growing concern among locals that it could fall into the hands of investors with little attachment to the community.

Securing ACV status would allow community groups a six-month period to raise funds and prepare a bid to purchase the pub before it is offered on the open market.

This initiative aims to preserve the building's historical significance and revive it as a central social hub for the town.

The community is now urged to share their memories and experiences of The Bell Inn to strengthen the nomination. Those with stories of the pub's better days, or who operated businesses during its operation, are encouraged to come forward.

The deadline for completing the supporting questionnaire is Friday 24th May 2024. For more information or to make direct inquiries, please contact [email protected].
