Shepton Mallet police appeal for information after Collett Park damage
Police in Shepton Mallet are calling on the people responsible for vandalising Collett Park to come forward and explain their actions.
The neighbourhood team expressed disappointment after a wall and new table football game in Collett Park were damaged on the evening of Saturday, April 29th. Despite regular and increased police patrols in the area, the incident occurred between 9pm-10pm and the culprits are yet to be identified.
In a statement, Mendip Neighbourhood Policing praised the town's volunteers, paid workers, and residents for their efforts to improve the community and compared it to the behaviour of those who carried out the vandalism.
In a Facebook post, a spokesperson for the team contrasted the vandalism to volunteers and paid workers "putting in time and effort to make the community better for all of us" and to give young people "freedom" to the 'attention-seeking' behaviour of those who had damaged the park.
Police said the culprits' motives were unclear and that their actions had added no value to the community.
The police are now reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify the individuals responsible, but are also appealing to the public for information.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or call 101, quoting crime reference 5223099641.
In the statement, the police also extended an invitation to those responsible to come forward and explain their actions.
The statement said, "Perhaps you were responsible and feel that your contribution to the town is being judged unfairly and you would like to come and explain to us what we're missing?"
