Shepton Mallet plaque scheme seeks town names
By Laura Linham 29th May 2026
Shepton Mallet residents are being asked to help uncover the names that should be celebrated on the town's streets.
The Shepton Town Plaque Scheme held its first community meeting on 8 April, and a second workshop has now been planned for 4 June.
The project aims to research and nominate notable people with links to Shepton Mallet, with the long-term goal of recognising them through plaques around the town.
The first session has already produced two, and possibly three, potential nominees.
They include a 15th or 16th century archbishop, a 17th century minister and children's author, and a 19th or 20th century economist.
The names have not yet been confirmed by the town council.
The next stage will focus on more community research, with residents being invited to get involved, suggest names and help build the evidence behind future nominations.
Organisers say the scheme is a chance to celebrate Shepton Mallet's rich history and make the town's stories more visible.
The project is also asking people to think about figures who may have been overlooked, as well as the better-known names already linked to the town.
Anyone with a possible nominee, or anyone who wants to take part in the research, can contact Shepton Mallet Town Council by emailing [email protected].
The next plaque scheme workshop will take place on 4 June.
