Shepton Mallet residents are invited to delve into the town's history this Wednesday, 30 October, as part of a new initiative to honour local figures through Blue Plaques.

The Town Council, alongside local historians, is researching prominent historical figures with a particular focus on the "thinking women" of Shepton Mallet, who championed women's rights around the turn of the 20th century.

The meeting, which will take place at Shepton Mallet Library at 7pm, aims to bring the community together to share knowledge and gather information. Residents with an interest in local history, the fight for women's rights, or learning how to research their family's history are encouraged to attend.

The initial focus will be on three influential women:

  • Dr Annie Wainwright Hyatt (1879–1969), among the first qualified female doctors. Known for her work as Medical Officer to the Workhouse and over 30 local schools, Annie also campaigned to extend free medical treatment to women and children, setting up a health insurance club to support her efforts.
  • Charlotte Sophie Horwood (1856–?), an outspoken supporter of women's suffrage, who famously spoilt her 1911 Census form, sending a strong message to the Government. Charlotte's activism aligned with figures such as Mabel Capper, who was later imprisoned and force-fed in Shepton Mallet as part of the same campaign.
  • Jean Garaway (1865–1954), a driving force behind the Arts & Crafts movement in Shepton Mallet and a key organiser for the National Home Reading Union. During WWI, Jean became the town's first female Coal Overseer, a significant position at a time when coal was a vital resource.

Organisers are eager to gather any letters, photos, or other materials residents may have about these figures. By working together, the Council and community hope to shine a light on Shepton Mallet's historical legacy and ensure that these pioneering women receive the recognition they deserve.

The meeting is open to all, and those interested are encouraged to bring any information they may have about Shepton's history.
