Shepton Mallet's beloved landmark, the Amulet Theatre in Market Place, sees its community share offer end today (Friday 31 October 2025) — giving locals their final shot to invest and help reopen the building.
The campaign, run by the group Let's Buy the Amulet, has given members the chance to buy a minimum of 250 shares at £1 each in the venture to revive the theatre — once the beating heart of the town's cultural scene.
The aim is to raise toward a target of £200,000 to purchase, refurbish and reopen the venue for performance, community events and local hire.
Chairman Martin Berkeley said: "Momentum has been growing with local people and organisations continuing to buy shares right up to the close of the scheme." A total of 246 members had invested almost £110,000 by Tuesday this week.
Originally built in 1975 as part of Shepton Mallet town‑centre regeneration and gifted by the Showering family, the Amulet closed in 2011 and has since been under private ownership. The theatre features a rare 270‑seat layout and a unique motorised ceiling that transforms into a dance‑floor.
Organisers say that with the share offer closing today, those still interested must act before midnight — and may spread payments over up to ten monthly instalments. Full details are available on the campaign website.
