Shepton Mallet lantern parade confirms December return
By Laura Linham 12th Oct 2026
Shepton Mallet's lantern parade will return on Saturday, 19 December, with families able to make their own lanterns at workshops ahead of the event.
Organisers have confirmed a 5pm start at the bandstand, with lantern-making sessions planned for late November and early December.
The workshop dates and venue are due to be announced this month.
Volunteers will help participants turn willow and tissue paper into lanterns to carry in the parade. Attendance at the workshops will be free, with a small charge for materials.
Children are welcome, although anyone under 16 must be supervised.
Organisers are asking people to reuse battery-powered LED lights where possible and bring them along for their lanterns. A limited number will also be available to buy.
For anyone who would prefer to make a lantern at home, the festival website has free downloadable guides covering basic construction and different shapes.
Further details and workshop announcements will be available on the Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival website.
