Shepton Mallet jobs round-up: night shifts, number crunching and a frankly heroic amount of cheese

Local News by Laura Linham 10th Apr 2026
Whether you’re properly job hunting with a spreadsheet and a strong tea, or just having a little nosy while pretending to do something else, this week’s crop around Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet is a decent mixed bag.

Shepton Mallet's latest batch of jobs has a bit of everything: nights, numbers, machinery, healthcare and at least one role involving cheese, which feels reassuringly on-brand for this neck of the woods.

There's a finance assistant post for someone who likes order, engineering roles for those who prefer things with moving parts, and a production job for anyone happy to muck in somewhere less glamorous but perfectly real. It's not all shiny offices and motivational slogans — thank goodness — but it is the sort of work that keeps places ticking over, which is usually the stuff that matters most.

For the numbers people

If you like a reconciliation, a forecast and the quiet thrill of a balanced ledger, there's a Management Accountant role in Glastonbury paying up to £55,000 a year, permanent, and very much five days a week on site. It's a broad one too: monthly and termly accounts, VAT, audit support, business partnering, system improvements and all the glamorous bits like journals, accruals and prepayments. They want an ACCA, ACA or CIMA-qualified accountant, ideally someone who can talk to budget holders without either side wishing for the sweet release of death.

A rung down the finance ladder but no less useful, there's also a Finance Assistant position in Shepton Mallet at £35,000 a year, full-time and permanent. Robert Half says it's with an established SME and the role has opened up because of a promotion, which is usually more encouraging than "someone left suddenly and nobody will say why". It sounds like the sort of job for someone who likes being the person who quietly keeps the whole finance team from descending into chaos.

For people who can keep the show on the road

If you fancy working somewhere slightly more historic than the average office park, Glastonbury Abbey is hiring a Visitor Operations Executive on £25,350 a year, full-time and permanent. It's five days in seven, including weekends, bank holidays and some evenings, and the role covers admissions, retail, events and visitor communications across the Abbey and Abbey House. In plain English: you'll need to be organised, calm, good with systems, and capable of dealing with the public in one of the town's biggest visitor spots without going full medieval yourself. Closing date is 9am on Monday 27 April 2026, with interviews on 6 and 7 May 2026.

There's also a Network Supervisor nights role in Shepton Mallet paying around £35,000 a year. The listing is a bit on the brief side — one of those "click apply for full details" numbers — but the basics are there: Monday to Friday nights, permanent, and aimed at someone who can oversee things while the rest of us are asleep and the industrial estate is lit like a low-budget crime drama.

For the practical types and night owls

A hefty one on the pay front is this Maintenance Engineer night shift role near Wells at £57,890.50 a year, plus bonus, overtime, technical training and a 10% pension. It's a 4-on, 4-off night shift pattern from 6pm to 6am, in food manufacturing, and they want someone from a manufacturing or industrial background who's happy handling both electrical and mechanical maintenance. Not for anyone emotionally attached to normal sleeping hours, but the pay packet may soften the blow.

Also in the "things break, you fix them" category is a Multi Skilled Engineer role in Somerset based out of Shepton Mallet, with a salary of £53,000 and OTE over £60,000. It runs on a 4 on, 4 off shift pattern, covering two days and two nights, so again: not one for people who insist on seeing every Saturday afternoon. It's with an FMCG manufacturer, which usually means things move fast and stop for nobody.

Then there's a more hands-on production job if you'd rather be on the line than in the boardroom. A Production Operative role in Ditcheat is going at £19.52 an hour, temp to perm, with duties including bagging and sealing cheese, checking for contaminants and operating equipment safely. It's through Thrive Group, and they note you'll need your own transport because Ditcheat is lovely but not exactly overrun with useful bus connections. If you've ever fancied a career adjacent to cheese, here is your moment.

Care, catering and people-facing work

Over at Glastonbury Care Home, Brunelcare is looking for a Cook on a part-time basis, paying £13.31 to £14.61 an hour. The job is helping the Head Chef prepare and serve meals for residents and visitors, keep the kitchen clean, and occasionally step up if the Head Chef is away. It needs someone with previous catering experience who can handle different shifts, including weekends. Not flashy, but solid, useful work — and frankly more meaningful than half the jobs involving the word "stakeholder".

If you've got the qualifications and don't mind travelling between clinics, there's a Hearing Aid Audiologist role covering Shepton Mallet, Worle and Radstock with The Hearing Care Partnership, with earnings listed at £42,000 to £120,000 including commission and bonus. There's a company car or allowance, gym membership, health cash plan and the usual modern bundle of perks, and they're after HCPC-registered Hearing Aid Dispensers or Audiologists. One for someone who wants clinical work with a bit of road time and a lot more earning potential than the average village noticeboard might suggest.

For the very qualified and very well paid

At the top end of the salary stakes this week is a Private Client Senior Associate role in Wells paying £70,000 to £90,000, permanent, with hybrid working once settled, 30 days' annual leave and private healthcare. It's with a well-regarded regional law firm and covers wills, probate, trusts, LPAs and estate planning, along with supervising one fee earner and one legal assistant. Definitely one for someone already established in private client law rather than anyone who once watched an episode of Judge Rinder and fancied giving it a go.

That's this week's lot: money jobs, maintenance jobs, care jobs, public-facing jobs and one role involving enough cheese to keep Somerset's reputation intact.
