Shepton Mallet firefighters have thanked local army cadets after a training exercise in Drill Hall Lane.

Crews from Shepton Mallet Fire Station were joined by Shepton Mallet Army Cadets at their facility this week. The cadets helped stage a simulated explosion followed by fire, smoke and multiple casualties with different injuries.

The exercise gave firefighters a chance to practise Ten Second Triage, known as TST. The process allows emergency responders to assess several casualties quickly and prioritise them depending on the severity of their injuries.

Shepton Mallet Fire Station said the cadets were "full of enthusiasm" and a credit to their leaders and the wider community.

The station said using the premises and working with live casualty scenarios was valuable for crew development and training. It also gave firefighters a more realistic setting in which to practise decision-making under pressure.
