Shepton Mallet embraces outdoor spirit with "Shepton Walks" to beat January blues

In a bid to shake off the January blues and encourage community bonding, Shepton Mallet introduces "Shepton Walks".

This initiative, in collaboration with Shepton Mallet Town Council, features a series of guided outdoor walks throughout January, including New Year's Day.

The initiative aims to promote physical activity, community engagement, and an appreciation for the local environment. Walks are scheduled every Sunday in January, offering varying levels of difficulty and length to accommodate participants of all ages and abilities.

Key Details of the Walks:

  • 1st January – 'New Year's Day': Blow the Cobwebs Away
  • A 3-mile walk designed for a fresh start to the year.
  • Starts at 11 am to accommodate those desiring a New Year's lie-in.
  • 7th January – History Trail
  • This 5-mile walk offers insights into Shepton's tumultuous history.
  • It's an easy/moderate walk, primarily on roads.
  • 14th January – Explore the New Pathways Part 1: The Strawberry Line
  • A leisurely 4-mile walk along the Strawberry Line on the new multi-user pathway.
  • The walk is accessible with flat terrain.
  • 21st January – Explore the New Pathways Part 2: The Somerset and Dorset Railway
  • An adventurous 4.5-mile journey following the old train line, including Windsor Hill Woods.
  • This walk is more challenging, with some steep gradients.
  • 28th January – Wear Your Best Woolly Hat
  • A fun-filled 3.5-mile walk where participants don their most amusing hats.
  • A chance to spread smiles and warmth.

All walks, except for the New Year's Day walk, start at 10 am from the Market Place in Shepton Mallet. Participants are advised to wear weather-resistant shoes with good grip and are encouraged to register their interest online. For any questions or updates on the walks, email [email protected].
