Shepton Mallet's local art community is preparing for its Winter Exhibition, set to run from 8th to 15th November at 'Create@#8', 8 Town Street. The exhibition, which will be open daily from 10am to 4pm, will feature acclaimed Somerset artist Kate Lynch as the guest exhibitor and is expected to draw art lovers from across the region.
Kate Lynch is widely known for her distinctive approach to documenting rural traditions through her atmospheric charcoal drawings and paintings. Her work often centres around the crafts and trades that form the backbone of Somerset's cultural heritage, creating a sensitive and compelling record of traditions that are slowly disappearing.
Over the years, Lynch has spent countless hours alongside willow growers, basket makers, shepherds, beekeepers, farmers, and cidermakers, capturing their skills and stories through her art. Reflecting on her experiences, she said: "It was absolutely wonderful sitting with the basket makers in their cold sheds drawing while they wove the willow into a basket. As they talked about their history, a history so far from my early life in the suburbs, I felt I was travelling both in time and space, which, of course, I was."
Her artwork and books have become a cherished record of rural Somerset's way of life, providing a poignant reminder of the crafts and traditions that are at risk of fading away. The upcoming exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see this body of work up close and to connect with the stories behind the scenes.
A spokesperson for Shepton Artists said: "We are thrilled to be exhibiting Kate's work, which truly captures the beating heart of Somerset. Anyone who loves this area and its history will not want to miss this exhibition."
Kate Lynch has been painting for over 30 years and has exhibited at prestigious venues including the Royal Academy in London and the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. Her work has also featured on BBC's Countryfile, highlighting the enduring appeal of her depictions of rural life.
The exhibition will run from 8th to 15th November at Create@#8, 8 Town Street, Shepton Mallet, and will be open daily from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free, and all are welcome.
