Drivers in and around Shepton Mallet are being reminded they still have time to have their say on plans for new 40mph speed limits around Beacon Cross.

Somerset Council's consultation remains open until Wednesday, 7 October, giving residents and road users a final chance to support or object to the proposed changes before a decision is made.

The scheme would introduce a consistent 40mph limit on approaches to Beacon Cross, near Shepton Mallet, covering stretches of the A37 Long Hill, Old Frome Road and A367 Bath Road.

On the Shepton side, the proposed restrictions would cover 220 metres of the A37 Long Hill, 346 metres of Old Frome Road and 910 metres of the A367 Bath Road.

Further stretches approaching the junction from the Wells direction would also be reduced to 40mph, creating the same lower limit on all approaches to the crossroads.

Somerset Council says the aim is to reduce the risk and severity of collisions and create a safer environment for road users.

The proposal was first published on 16 September and remains at consultation stage. No final decision has yet been taken.
