Shepton braces for thunderstorms: Met Office Issues Yellow Alert Amid Rising Temperatures
The Met Office has announced a yellow alert for thunderstorms expected to hit portions of Somerset on Saturday, June 10.
Somerset regions covered under the warning include Wells, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Burnham, Highbridge, and Frome.
According to a spokesperson for the Met Office, "The increased temperatures expected across parts of England and Wales this Saturday could result in a series of showers in these regions. Some of these showers could become severe thunderstorms, bringing about 30-40mm of rain within an hour.
"Though a large number of places will remain predominantly dry, the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and hail cannot be ruled out in certain areas on Saturday afternoon.
"There's a minor risk of homes and businesses experiencing rapid flooding, with potential damage resulting from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or high winds.
"Conditions such as spray and sudden flooding might lead to challenging driving conditions, possibly resulting in some road closures.
"In the event of flooding or lightning strikes, there could be disruptions leading to delays, and potentially even cancellations of railway services.
"There's a marginal chance that power supply might be interrupted and certain services to homes and businesses could be temporarily unavailable."
The southwestern regions likely to be impacted include Bristol, Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire.
