The second Black Lives Matter Somerset peaceful protest in Shepton Mallet took place in Collett Park on Sunday.

Despite the inclement weather, many locals still came out in a show of support and on several occasions the crowd broke into applause in agreement of what the speakers had to say.

There were many speeches including Maia Thomas from Exeter Black Lives Matter on her experiences of growing up black in rural Devon; Kellie Simpson from Somerset Multicultural Association spoke on positive changes that could be implemented to create a racially equal society, for example unconscious bias training within our institutions; and Sharon Stafford, an activist and former member of the Somerset Racial Equality Council, explained how schools could broaden their curriculum to include a more racially diverse range of important inventors and inspirational Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Britons.

Pete the Poet provided an opportunity for children to get involved by creating a piece of artwork and told a story where the children were transported on a musical, magic carpet to distant lands.

A spokesperson for the event told Shepton Mallet Nub News: "We would like to thank Shepton Mallet for being a welcoming and inclusive town, and for acknowledging the need for change."
