Residents in the Mendip area are being urged to take precautions to protect their vehicles from catalytic converter thefts, following a spike in the number of thefts.

Catalytic converters contain precious metals such as rhodium, platinum, and palladium, which have seen a significant rise in price over recent years. As a result, thefts of catalytic converters have become increasingly common, with hybrid vehicles and Japanese makes being popular targets.

Vans and SUVs are also at risk, as their higher ride height makes it easier for thieves to access the exhaust system. There have also been cases of diesel oxidation catalysts being stolen for their scrap value.

To keep vehicles safe, the police advise residents to contact their manufacturer or dealer for advice on locks or guards to protect their catalytic converters. It is important to ensure that the vehicle manufacturer approves any used products and inform the insurance company of any modifications made.

Heat-resistant marking systems are also available to secure catalytic converters, which a garage can apply during servicing. Companies offering such products can be found on the Secured by Design website, which provides police recognition for security-related products in the UK.

A spokesperson for the police emphasised the importance of taking preventative measures to avoid catalytic converter thefts.

He said: "We encourage residents to take the necessary precautions to protect their vehicles, especially those most commonly targeted. By working together and taking these steps, we can reduce the risk of these incidents occurring in our communities."

Residents who witness any suspicious activity or have any information regarding catalytic converter thefts in the Mendip East areas are encouraged to report it to the police by calling 101 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
