More than 20 villagers joined a parish council planning Zoom meeting to object to an application in Chilcompton.

Villagers say a proposal by Gladman property promoters to build 95 houses to the south east of the village has left them in a state of shock.

CARO, Chilcompton Against Rural Over-development, has leafleted the entire village urging residents to fight against the development, which would increase the community by 10 per cent, by writing letters of objection to Mendip District Council.

Meanwhile an online petition has been set up, generating more than 360 signatures in just a few days.

Rich Morgan, CARO spokesman, said: "We've got to get our voices heard in any way we can.

"We've got to stop this unwanted and unsustainable development."

Gladman submitted the plans earlier this month, saying the development would increase the supply and choice of housing within Chilcompton.
