A formal request to lower the speed limit on the A37 at Bath Road, Downside, is set to be discussed at tonight's Shepton Mallet Town Council planning committee meeting.

Two residents have asked for the speed limit to be reduced to 30mph, citing concerns over road safety. Their request will be considered by the Town Development and Planning Committee, which meets this evening (Tuesday) at 7pm in the committee rooms at Shape Mendip.

The committee's recommendation will be passed to the Highways Authorit for further consideration.

Also on the agenda tonight are a number of planning applications, including:

  • A listed building consent request (2025/0818/LBC) for the retrospective installation of a replacement glazed entrance door at 64 High Street, part of the Haskins Retail Centre. Comments are split, with some supporting the design and others objecting on the grounds it is not in keeping with the local area.
  • An application (2025/0523/FUL) for the provision of electric vehicle charging bays and associated infrastructure at Kilver Court Gardens. Views have been raised in support of vehicular access improvements, with some stating it will not impact road safety due to proposed visibility splays. Others object due to poor visibility and high traffic speeds.
  • A listed building application (2025/0781/LBC) for the re-cladding of a wooden ventilation louvre box on the roofline of building GG12 at the Anglo Trading Estate on Commercial Road, to better match the building's original appearance.
